B2B sales leaders need a higher standard for AI call summaries
Revenue Growth Agent CEO Matt Oess argues for better AI summaries to help sellers.

Sales teams can field a high number of calls each day, and relying on AI summaries has become increasingly important.
Matt Oess, CEO of sales intelligence platform Revenue Growth Agent, penned an article this month titled “Why B2B sales teams need more than AI call summaries to improve deal decisions,” stressing that sales teams need to hold these summaries to a higher standard to get the most out of them.
“Sales teams have largely solved the call-capture problem, but they have not necessarily solved the decision problem,” Oess said in a statement. “A polished summary can tell a sales rep what was discussed without revealing whether the opportunity is actually qualified or whether the seller is relying on assumptions the buyer never confirmed.”
Sum it up: Oess says clean copy and accurate transcripts should be the bare minimum for AI call summaries. Instead, sales teams should use the recordings to determine if there are any risks, opportunities, and what next steps need to be taken.
Oess said deal intelligence can analyze buyer concerns, questions, and other sentiments and flag what is important and requires a rep to take action.
“Capturing what the buyer said is the foundation,” Oess said. “Deal intelligence comes from determining what those statements reveal about business value, qualification, risk, and the actions required to move the opportunity forward.”
He stressed that this can also address discrepancies between what a customer said and how a rep interpreted the conversation.
“Sales teams need AI that challenges assumptions instead of reinforcing them,” said Oess. “If the buyer did not confirm the urgency, quantify the impact, or explain how a decision will be made, the seller needs to know that before treating the opportunity as qualified.”

The landscape: According to ZoomInfo’s State of AI in Sales report, 45% of sellers reported using AI at least once a week. This will include automated transcription and AI-powered call summary services that are now a staple of daily life for sellers. These folks also have an embarrassment of riches in the deal intelligence space to beef up their tech stacks and, most importantly, turn conversations into actionable insight. It’s a lot to have in your tech tool kit, especially when cost and ROI are top of mind. Here at Revenue Brew we’ve covered the likes of Gong, Clari + Salesloft, and Apollo, as they present GTM leaders with new avenues to supercharge client interactions. (Also, remember this in-call AI copilot?) The key, it seems, is striking a balance with all these tools. Like all tech stack deployment, understanding its place in your business’s unique ecosystem is crucial (and identifying specific use cases).
For sales leaders specifically, threading the needle between old-world techniques and shiny new technology must feel treacherous at times. We know AI can save time and provide efficiencies (and no, it isn’t killing sales yet…), but the risks of missing the mark are key. For sellers, saving time is important (hence transcripts and summaries), but so is active listening and objection handling in the moment. That human touch, paired with intelligence tools that can judge client interactions against your own specific criteria, could be a powerful force. Sales is changing, but it’s still both an art and science; success is probably finding the right balance of the two.
